Lanre Issa-Onilu urges Christians and Muslims to join forces for peace, reconciliation, and strengthened national harmony

By Joy Onu

As Nigeria marks the Easter season, the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, has called on citizens to uphold the values of love, tolerance, and unity in their daily interactions.

Issa-Onilu stressed that this period of reflection is crucial for fostering national cohesion. He reminded Nigerians that the country’s strength lies in its diversity and the willingness of citizens to work together, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or political differences.

The NOA chief also highlighted the ongoing security challenges facing the nation. Recent attacks in Maiduguri, Borno State, during Ramadan, and the Palm Sunday assault on Angwan Rukuba in Jos were cited as reminders that violent extremists remain a significant threat to peace and stability.

In light of recent violent attacks, Issa-Onilu assured Nigerians that the government’s efforts to combat insecurity are ongoing, with resources being deployed to safeguard communities nationwide.

He further called for collective action from Nigerians, urging both Christians and Muslims to unite against common threats. Religious leaders, traditional authorities, and community influencers were specifically asked to leverage their platforms to promote messages of peace, reconciliation, and mutual respect.

The DG also appealed to media outlets and civil society organizations to actively counter divisive narratives and hate speech that extremists exploit to manipulate communities. He emphasized that a united front is essential to defeating terrorism and safeguarding national harmony.

The NOA chief wished Christians a happy Easter, urging Nigerians to use the season as a time for reconciliation, hope, and strengthened unity.
