The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency, Lanre Issa-Onilu, has urged Nigerians to use the occasion of Democracy Day to renew their commitment to democratic principles, the rule of law, national unity, and responsible citizenship.
In a message commemorating June 12, Issa-Onilu described Democracy Day as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Nigerians in the struggle for democratic governance and the protection of citizens’ rights and freedoms.
He said democracy remains the most effective system for ensuring accountability, inclusive governance, and citizen participation, noting that it empowers citizens to freely choose their leaders, hold public office holders accountable, and contribute meaningfully to national development.
According to him, the annual celebration is not only an opportunity to honour the heroes and heroines of Nigeria’s democratic struggle but also a time to reflect on the collective responsibility required to sustain democratic institutions and values.
“Today, we celebrate not only the heroes and heroines who made sacrifices for the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria, but also the enduring spirit of the Nigerian people who continue to uphold democratic ideals despite various challenges. Democracy gives every citizen a voice and offers the best platform for peaceful national development, social justice, and economic progress,” he said.
Issa-Onilu stressed that democracy extends beyond periodic elections, emphasizing the need for continuous civic engagement, respect for the rule of law, tolerance of differing opinions, civic responsibility, and commitment to the common good.
He also called on Nigerians, particularly young people, to reject misinformation, hate speech, political violence, and other actions capable of undermining national cohesion and weakening democratic institutions.
The NOA Director-General reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to promoting patriotism, civic education, and national consciousness through sustained public enlightenment campaigns, community engagement initiatives, voter education programmes, and advocacy for responsible citizenship.
He further commended government institutions, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, religious leaders, media practitioners, and development partners for their contributions to democratic governance and peaceful coexistence across the country.
