The Federal Government has declared June 12, 2026, a public holiday, calling on Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and renew their commitment to unity, responsible citizenship and democratic values.
In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on Thursday, the Federal Government said the public holiday is intended to commemorate Democracy Day and honour the sacrifices of Nigerians who fought for democratic governance.
Describing Democracy Day as one of the most important dates in Nigeria’s history, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, said the occasion celebrates the courage, resilience and sacrifices of citizens whose struggles paved the way for democratic governance in the country.
According to him, the legacy of those efforts continues to shape the principles upon which the Nigerian state is built and serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility required to sustain democracy.
Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting governance anchored on the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusiveness.
He stressed that preserving democratic ideals remains a key priority of the administration, noting that efforts would continue to ensure that public institutions operate in line with those principles.
The minister also assured Nigerians that the Ministry of Interior, working closely with security agencies, would sustain measures aimed at safeguarding lives and property across the country.
He noted that peace and security remain critical to democratic stability and national development.
While urging citizens to commemorate the day peacefully, Tunji-Ojo encouraged Nigerians to remain law-abiding, participate constructively in national affairs and support institutions that uphold democratic governance.
“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” he stated.
Celebrated annually on June 12, Democracy Day commemorates Nigeria’s democratic progress and the efforts of those who championed the return to civil governance.
