The Nigerian media fraternity woke up on Wednesday to the sad news that Newswatch co-founder Yakubu Muhammad had passed away. The veteran journalist died in the early hours after a brief illness, leaving behind a legacy that has profoundly shaped investigative journalism in Nigeria.

Yakubu Muhammad died at the age of 75, leaving behind his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Mr Muhammad, a trailblazer in Nigerian media, co-founded Newswatch in 1985, transforming the landscape of reporting with fearless journalism and incisive political analysis. The magazine quickly became a benchmark for accountability, press freedom, and professional excellence.

Colleagues and protégés remember him as more than a journalist—he was a mentor, guide, and father figure whose wisdom and encouragement shaped the careers of countless media professionals.

His body left Lagos the same day and will be buried on Thursday, January 15, in his hometown of Ologba, Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, according to Islamic rites. Further burial rites, including the three- and eight-day fidau prayers, will be announced by the family after he has been laid to rest.

Several dignitaries and public figures have condoled the family on the loss, including former Senate President David Mark; former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed; veteran journalist and media consultant, Femi Adesina; and the current President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Abdullahi Mohammed, among others. They all described Mr. Muhammad as a pillar of Nigerian journalism whose legacy will inspire generations to come.

Mr. Muhammad’s influence extended far beyond journalism. He inspired generations of Nigerian reporters to pursue truth with courage and integrity, leaving an enduring mark on the nation’s media landscape.
