National icon remembered for integrity, mentorship, and contributions to Nigerian journalism
The Northern Nigeria Minorities Group (NNMG) has paid heartfelt tribute to Chief Dan Agbese, veteran journalist, master of letters, and widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s finest minds in service of the nation.
In a condolence message signed by its Convener, Chief Jacob Edi, the group described Chief Agbese’s passing as the end of an era, noting, “Truly, an Iroko has fallen.”
Chief Agbese, who passed at the age of 81, was celebrated not only as a newsroom icon but also as the “Editor of Editors,” a consummate professional whose career set the benchmark for integrity, intellectual courage, and depth. Over six decades, he wrote with clarity, wit, and precision, providing fearless commentary on power, politics, and public conscience, during both Nigeria’s pre- and post-colonial transitions.
“Even at 81, his essays carried the sharpness of a man who never stopped interrogating power and holding leaders accountable,” the NNMG statement read.
The group highlighted Chief Agbese’s pivotal role in confronting military rule with nothing but his pen and principles, helping pave the way for Nigeria’s democratic order. His contributions to investigative reporting, political commentary, and journalistic ethics have left an enduring mark on modern Nigerian journalism.
Known for his lucid prose and biting satire, Chief Agbese was also a mentor who nurtured countless journalists, instilling in them the values of justice, equity, and professionalism. Beyond journalism, the NNMG said, he was a cultural witness and national conscience, using his writings to foster inclusion, challenge stereotypes, and influence public policy.
For Northern Nigeria’s minorities, Chief Agbese’s work was more than journalism; it was a bridge for understanding and dialogue. His guidance, historical insight, and commitment to fairness are deeply missed by his community, colleagues, and all who knew him.
The NNMG extended heartfelt condolences to the Agbese family, his community, and fellow media practitioners, urging all to take solace in the exemplary life he lived and the legacy he leaves behind.
“May the Almighty grant his soul peaceful rest and comfort those he leaves behind,” the group added.
