Nigerian workers will observe a nationwide public holiday on Friday, May 1, 2026, as the Federal Government sets aside the day to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the decision, praising the resilience and commitment of workers whose efforts continue to sustain the country’s economy and public institutions.

According to a statement released by the Federal Ministry of Interior and signed by Permanent Secretary Magdalene Ajani, the government acknowledged the vital role played by workers in driving national development, particularly in challenging times.

The minister stressed that the productivity and dedication of the workforce remain critical to Nigeria’s long-term growth, urging employees across sectors to remain committed to excellence in their duties.

He also highlighted the need for stronger patriotism and a shared sense of responsibility, noting that these values are essential for building a stable and prosperous nation.

Reaffirming its stance, the Federal Government said it would continue to prioritise policies that enhance workers’ welfare and create a more enabling environment for economic activities.

As the country mark Workers’ Day, Nigerians have been advised to maintain peace and order, while using the occasion to reflect on the importance of unity, hard work, and collective progress.
