…Promises Electoral Reforms Through Technology

A new chapter has opened for Nigeria’s electoral body as the Senate confirmed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following the completion of a decade-long tenure by Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

For the University of Jos Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), the confirmation marks both a personal milestone and a national responsibility. Hailing from Kogi State in the North Central region, Amupitan brings to the position a blend of academic distinction and legal expertise that many believe could redefine electoral integrity in Nigeria.

During his Senate screening, Amupitan made a bold commitment to integrate advanced technology, including the use of drones and to collaborate with critical agencies such as the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to curb irregularities and enhance voter authentication.

His confirmation has sparked optimism among political observers who believe his leadership will drive much-needed reforms and restore public confidence in the electoral process. According to them, his pledge underscores a growing recognition that credible elections depend on innovation, transparency, and institutional trust.

As Amupitan assumes office, attention will now shift to how his leadership translates vision into action particularly in an era when Nigerians demand not only free and fair elections but also systems that genuinely reflect the will of the people.
