The Independent National Electoral Commission and the Nigerian Air Force have stepped up collaboration to tackle one of the most critical challenges of election management—logistics.
The partnership was discussed during a meeting at INEC headquarters in Abuja between the Commission’s chairman, Joash Amupitan, and the Chief of the Air Staff, Sunday Kelvin Aneke.
Amupitan highlighted that transporting personnel and sensitive materials across Nigeria’s vast and difficult terrain remains one of the biggest operational hurdles. He emphasized that the timely deployment of electoral staff and materials often determines whether polling begins smoothly at thousands of locations nationwide.
Preparations for the 2027 elections are already underway, with the official timetable released by the Commission. Presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while governorship and state assembly elections will take place on February 16.
To address logistical challenges early, INEC plans to coordinate closely with the Air Force through a technical framework, allowing both institutions to plan deployments and timelines well in advance of major electoral activities.
Amupitan highlighted the Air Force’s past support in reaching remote communities during previous elections and by-elections, which helped ensure materials and personnel arrived on time.
Air Marshal Aneke assured the Commission that the Air Force remains ready to provide airlift support for personnel and electoral materials, particularly in hard-to-reach locations. He added that surveillance technologies, including drones, could be deployed to enhance situational awareness and assist security agencies in detecting potential threats early.
Both leaders expressed confidence that strengthened coordination between the electoral body and the Air Force will contribute significantly to delivering secure, orderly, and credible elections in 2027.
