As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 General Election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is intensifying efforts to ensure a credible, transparent, and efficient electoral process. On Thursday, 5th March 2026, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, visited the Commission’s state office in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to engage directly with staff and reinforce the importance of professionalism at every level.
The visit coincided with a technical workshop in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, where personnel gathered to review electoral processes and operational strategies. After inspecting voter registration centres in the area, Prof. Amupitan stressed that the quality of the 2027 elections would largely depend on the commitment and diligence demonstrated by staff today.
“Nigerians expect credible, free, and fair elections,” he told staff. “Meeting those expectations requires unwavering professionalism, transparency, and integrity from everyone in the Commission.”
The Chairman highlighted ongoing initiatives designed to strengthen the electoral framework, including internal reviews, technical workshops, and operational improvements. He underscored the significance of the ongoing Voter Revalidation Exercise, which aims to remove duplicate registrations and deceased voters from the register, ensuring that only eligible citizens participate in the elections.
Collaboration with key national data institutions such as the National Population Commission and the National Identity Management Commission, he explained, is central to achieving accurate population data and a trustworthy voter register.
Prof. Amupitan also addressed staff welfare and career progression, revealing plans to establish a specialised professional cadre for INEC personnel. This move is intended to formally recognise the technical expertise and high-stakes responsibilities required for election management.
He congratulated officers recently promoted in the Commission’s latest exercise, reiterating the Commission’s commitment to improving working conditions and retirement benefits.
On the technology front, the Chairman called on staff to ensure that all electoral innovations, including the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, are fully operational and ready for deployment. He reminded them that the integrity of elections and public confidence in Nigeria’s democracy depends significantly on their dedication.
Welcoming the Chairman, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Akwa Ibom State, Obo Effanga, noted that the visit provided an opportunity for direct engagement with staff and an appreciation of their efforts in implementing INEC’s mandate at the state level.
Prof. Amupitan was accompanied by National Commissioners Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, Prof. Rhoda Gumus, and A. T. Yusuf, along with Technical Aides to the Chairman. The visit reinforced INEC’s message that election readiness begins with a professional and committed workforce.
