The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kogi State is rallying its members to uphold the party’s grassroots agenda ahead of the forthcoming local elections. The call was made by the State Chairman, Hon. Sunday Maiyaki, during a nomination form presentation ceremony for candidates in the Eastern Senatorial District.
According to the press release issued by the Secretary of the party, Hon. Mamman Akpena, Maiyaki appealed to executive members and stakeholders to remain steadfast in pursuing the developmental objectives of the party. The event which held on Monday in Ayangba, saw the distribution of forms to candidates contesting chairmanship and councillorship positions across all nine local government areas in Kogi East.
Highlighting the challenges facing the party, Maiyaki described ADC as a “nightmare” for certain political opportunists who attempt to infiltrate the party through backdoor means. “Instead of contributing positively, some individuals aim to use our party for selfish interests, expecting us to condone their actions,” he said.
The chairman traced the party’s progress to the tireless efforts of committed members since 2017, warning against actions that could destabilize both the ADC and Nigeria’s democratic institutions. “Some people, who cannot even manage their personal affairs, are trying to undermine the survival of democratic institutions through the party,” he added.
Maiyaki also addressed the potential consequences of political d
isunity, referencing past mistakes in 2014 that nearly led to national collapse. He cautioned that similar disruptions could derail current efforts to revitalize the nation’s economy. “Our party is not at a crossroads as some political critics claim. ADC represents the future aspirations and development of our people,” he said.
At the same occasion, Hon. Mamman Akpena admonished members against internal disputes and emphasized the party’s singular leadership structure, naming Elder Leke Abejide Joseph as the National Leader. “Our party and our principal are unshakeable. No matter what happens, ADC will remain strong and will spring surprises in the upcoming local elections,” Akpena said.
During the meeting, local government party chairmen also urged the state leadership to provide practical tools and resources that would enhance performance at the grassroots level. The programme ended with the formal presentation of nomination forms and recognition of party stakeholders across the nine local government areas.
The ADC in Kogi State has experienced internal differences among factions, as members and interest groups discuss the party’s direction ahead of the local elections. Despite these differences, the event underlined the party’s commitment to discipline, unity, and grassroots mobilization as it positions itself strategically ahead of the polls.
