Ahead of 2027, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) calls for reforms to ensure real-time transmission of polling unit results, strengthen public trust, and prevent post-election disputes.

The NUJ has emphasised the urgent need for reforms in handling and transmitting election results, as lawmakers review the framework for future polls.
In a statement, Alhassan Yahaya, National President, NUJ, stressed that clarity in electoral procedures is essential for national stability. Any ambiguity in managing election outcomes, he warned, risks undermining public trust and heightening political tensions.
“Nigerians have long demanded reforms that guarantee openness and verifiability in the electoral process,” the NUJ said. “Modern democracies increasingly rely on digital tools to protect the integrity of ballots and ensure results reflect voters’ true will.”
The Union highlighted that technology-driven mechanisms for real-time transmission of polling unit results to central collation platforms can reduce suspicion, increase transparency, and prevent post-election disputes. Clear and consistent processes, backed by technology, strengthen institutional credibility and deepen democratic culture.
As legislators finalise electoral provisions, the NUJ urged a focus on measures that inspire voter confidence. “Institutionalising enforceable guidelines for the swift transfer of election outcomes will show a commitment to credible and peaceful polls,” it said.
The Union emphasised that all stakeholders should prioritise the national interest and ensure that Nigeria’s electoral system upholds transparency, accountability, and public trust.
