Vandalism Suspected as Six Transmission Towers Fail on Apir–Lafia Route

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported the collapse of six transmission towers along the Apir–Lafia 330kV double circuit line, resulting in a disruption of bulk power supply to parts of North-Central Nigeria.

The incident involved towers T125 to T130 on the transmission corridor, which reportedly gave way at about 1:15 a.m. on 30 May 2026 during a heavy downpour.

In a statement issued by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said the development triggered a line trip. It added that operators attempted a trial reclosure on Line II at about 2:08 a.m., but the effort was unsuccessful.

A subsequent inspection of the route, according to the company, showed damage to key structural components of the affected towers, confirming acts of vandalism on the transmission line.

Following the discovery, both Apir–Lafia 330kV Transmission Lines I and II were shut down pending reconstruction and repair works.

The agency disclosed that engineers have already been deployed to the site to evaluate the extent of damage and compile the materials needed for restoration of the collapsed structures.

To cushion the impact of the outage, the Lafia 330kV Transmission Station is currently being supplied through the Lafia–Jos transmission line as a temporary alternative arrangement. This is expected to support electricity delivery within the franchise areas of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC).

TCN reiterated its condemnation of repeated vandalism on power infrastructure, warning that such acts continue to undermine grid stability and disrupt electricity supply across affected regions.

The company also urged host communities and the general public to assist security agencies by reporting any suspicious movement around transmission installations, stressing that protection of national grid assets requires collective responsibility.
