President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a six-month extension of tenure for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, in a move aimed at sustaining ongoing reforms in the country’s customs administration.
The approval was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The extension, described as final, will keep Adeniyi in office until February 2027, following the expiration of his current extended tenure scheduled for August 1, 2026. According to the Presidency, the decision is intended to allow the Customs chief consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window initiative, a major trade facilitation reform designed to simplify import and export processes, reduce delays at the ports, and improve revenue generation.
It added that the additional time will also support a more orderly transition within the Nigeria Customs Service while ensuring continuity of reforms already underway.
Under the arrangement, Adeniyi will work with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee key administrative processes, including the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the retirement of officers who have reached the statutory limits of 60 years of age or 35 years in service.
Adeniyi, a career officer, has spent over three decades in the Customs Service. He joined after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s and rose through the ranks, serving as Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in 2023, before his appointment as Comptroller-General in June 2023.
