The Nigerian media community remains in deep mourning following the violent death of Arise News anchor, reporter, and producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was killed during an armed robbery at her Katampe residence in Abuja on Monday.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council and the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) FCT chapter have expressed shock at the tragic incident, describing her death as not only a painful loss to Arise News but to the entire journalism profession in Nigeria.

Chairperson of NAWOJ FCT, Bassey Ita-Ikpang, said Maduagwu’s life and career reflected professionalism, passion, and commitment to excellence. She noted that her sudden passing was a huge blow to young journalists who looked up to her as a role model.
“Her professionalism and dedication made her stand out in the media industry. We urge the authorities to thoroughly investigate this tragic incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” Ita-Ikpang said.

On its part, the NUJ FCT Council, in a statement signed by its Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, described Maduagwu as a brilliant and courageous journalist who represented the best of her generation.
“Somtochukwu was passionate and ethical in her work. Her death is a devastating reminder of the rising insecurity in the country. We call on the Nigeria Police and security agencies to conduct a thorough forensic investigation and ensure the perpetrators face justice,” the NUJ said.

Both unions also used the occasion to draw attention to the growing risks journalists face in Nigeria, stressing the need for stronger security measures to safeguard citizens and media professionals, especially women covering sensitive issues.

They extended condolences to Maduagwu’s family, friends, and colleagues at Arise News, praying for comfort in this difficult time.

“Though her life was brief, her impact was profound. May her legacy continue to inspire courage, integrity, and truth in journalism,” the unions said in their joint message.
