Arise News Channel has confirmed the tragic death of its presenter, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was killed during an armed robbery at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja in the early hours of Monday.

Maduagwu, popularly known as Sommie, was 29 years old. According to a statement from the station’s management, the case has been reported to security agencies and the Nigeria Police have begun investigations.

Born on December 26, 1995, Maduagwu was not only a rising face on Nigerian television but also a qualified lawyer. She joined ARISE News as a reporter and quickly earned recognition as a news anchor and producer. Her vibrant screen presence and dedication made her a trusted voice to viewers nationwide.

In a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi, on behalf of ARISE News Management, the organisation described her death as a devastating loss:

“At just 29 years old, Sommie was a beloved news anchor, reporter, and producer whose vibrant presence and dedication deeply connected with viewers nationwide. Beyond her on-air role, she was a respected lawyer, a professional and supportive teammate, and a dear friend to many.”

The management also demanded justice, calling on law enforcement to ensure the swift arrest and prosecution of those responsible. “Though Sommie’s voice falls silent today, her spirit, passion, and legacy will forever remain part of the ARISE News family memory,” the statement added.

Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, viewers, and admirers who described her as passionate, intelligent, and deeply committed to her craft. Her untimely death has reignited concerns about rising insecurity in Abuja and across the country.
