Normal traffic flow has been restored on the Abuja–Lokoja Expressway following a weekend disruption caused by a standoff between truck drivers and military personnel. The incident reportedly involved the smashing of a truck’s windscreen, prompting drivers to blockade a section of the highway and causing severe gridlock for motorists travelling towards Lokoja and other destinations during the festive period.
According to a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Works, the Honourable Minister of Works, Sen. Engr. David Umahi, CON, FNSE, FNATE, immediately directed the opening of already completed sections of the expressway and approved the deployment of all necessary measures to restore free movement. The ministry emphasized that swift action was taken to ease the hardship faced by road users.
The Federal Controller of Works in Kogi State, Engr. Patiko Isah, disclosed that the free flow of traffic was restored at about 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, 21 December 2025, through coordinated efforts by the Field Headquarters, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other security agencies.
While addressing the situation, Engr. Umahi urged motorists to remain patient, orderly, and cautious, especially during the peak holiday travel season. He reassured Nigerians of the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable road transportation across the country.
The Ministry further highlighted that measures will continue to be implemented to maintain smooth traffic operations along major highways and reduce inconveniences to commuters.
Engr. Umahi also extended his best wishes to Nigerians for a safe, peaceful, and joyous festive celebration.
