The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to swift intervention on the Benin–Sapele Road, particularly the Obayantor section in Edo State, following mounting concerns over the road’s dilapidated state and its impact on security and the economy.

At a strategic meeting held at the Federal Ministry of Works headquarters in Abuja, the Honourable Minister of State for Works, Bello M. Goronyo, Esq., who represented the Minister of Works, Senator (Engr.) David Umahi, CON, FNSE, FNATE, acknowledged the urgency of the situation. The meeting was in response to a formal appeal from the Benin-Owena River Basin Development Authority (BORBDA), highlighting the critical nature of the road corridor.

Goronyo expressed concern over the multiple challenges plaguing the road, including rampant kidnappings, disruption of agricultural and commercial activities, and threats to national food security.

“I have listened with a heavy heart to your presentations. The kidnappings along that corridor, the economic losses, and the direct threat to food security are not palatable,” he said. “This is not just about roads; it’s about national stability and the well-being of our people. I assure you that the Ministry, under the leadership of Engr. Umahi, is committed to acting swiftly and decisively.”

The 24-kilometre stretch of road, which links key agricultural and industrial zones, has reportedly become nearly impassable, causing logistical delays and exposing commuters to attacks.

Dr. Adekanmbi Samuel, Managing Director of BORBDA, provided a detailed assessment of the road’s condition, warning that continued neglect would hamper national productivity.

“We are witnessing not just infrastructural decay but also a disruption in food supply chains and power infrastructure,” Adekanmbi said. “We believe a coordinated response from relevant agencies will support the president’s emergency declaration on food security.”

In his remarks, Engr. Bede Obioha, Director of Highways, Bridges and Design, who stood in for the Permanent Secretary, commended the collaborative effort and assured that the Ministry would prioritise the concerns raised.

“We welcome engagements like this as they help us identify critical gaps,” Obioha stated. “This Ministry remains responsive and committed to resolving transport-related challenges wherever they occur.”

The Federal Ministry of Works assured stakeholders that the road would be captured under its emergency intervention projects, with a focus on restoring mobility and safety in the region.
