The Federal Government has commended the successful patent registration of GASTROPEX-BH by researchers at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, describing the development as a landmark achievement for indigenous medical innovation in the country.

The commendation was conveyed by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, who described the breakthrough as a major milestone in strengthening Nigeria’s health research and innovation ecosystem.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the minister noted that the innovation reflects the growing capacity of Nigerian health professionals and institutions to develop practical solutions tailored to local healthcare needs.

He praised the management, staff, and research team of the teaching hospital for their commitment to scientific advancement and innovation-driven research capable of improving patient care and outcomes across the country.

Prof. Pate specifically applauded the innovators from the Department of Surgery, Dr. Aminu Muhammed Umar and Dr. Kefas John Bwala, for their intellectual input and dedication that led to the development and patent registration of GASTROPEX-BH.

He further stated that the achievement underscores the importance of sustained investment in medical research, local innovation, and capacity building as key drivers for strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system.

The minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to policies and initiatives that promote scientific research, innovation, and collaboration among health institutions nationwide. According to him, such breakthroughs are expected to inspire more Nigerian researchers and clinicians to pursue impactful innovations that can transform healthcare delivery within and beyond the country.
