Residents allege displacement, restricted access to schools and healthcare, and uninterrupted commercial quarry operations amid heightened security presence

By Joy Onu

Residents of Amasiri Community in Ebonyi State have voiced renewed concerns over ongoing security operations in their area, alleging that state-led actions have resulted in widespread displacement, restricted movement, and a growing humanitarian challenge.

Community representatives, speaking through a statement circulated to the media, accused the administration of Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru of misrepresenting the situation on the ground to justify a sustained military presence. They argued that official narratives portraying the area as violent do not reflect what they described as a largely peaceful community now struggling with the consequences of prolonged security measures.

Residents specifically questioned recent claims by the state government regarding the discovery of human remains, calling for independent verification and transparent investigations. They suggested that the official narrative has heightened tensions and deepened mistrust between the community and the government.

Concerns were also raised about the role of traditional institutions during the crisis. Elders were reportedly approached by government intermediaries and encouraged to participate in a reconciliation process. As part of this, a traditional peace ceremony was conducted, symbolising an end to hostilities and a commitment to dialogue.

However, community representatives claim that following the ceremony, security operations intensified. Reports of arrests, house-to-house searches, and sporadic shootings have emerged, with elderly and vulnerable residents among those affected.

Beyond security concerns, residents highlighted what they describe as a worsening humanitarian situation. Schools remain closed, agricultural activities are disrupted, and market access is restricted. Healthcare services, both public and private, are said to have been effectively halted, leaving injured and ill persons without treatment.

Despite the paralysis of daily life for residents, quarry operations in the area have reportedly continued uninterrupted. Community members allege that at least 28 quarry companies remain active, raising questions about economic priorities and the displacement of local populations from land connected to natural resources.

The allegations have prompted calls for intervention beyond the state. Residents urged the Federal Government of Nigeria, civil society groups, and international human rights organisations to investigate the situation and ensure that security operations adhere to human rights standards.

As of press time, the Ebonyi State Government had not issued a formal response to the allegations.

Observers note that the situation reflects broader national debates about security operations, community engagement, and balancing economic interests with human rights. For Amasiri residents, the immediate concern remains restoring access to basic services and ensuring personal safety while dialogue continues.
