The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Madam Stella Okoh Esene, a former Chairperson of its FCT Chapter, describing her as a devoted professional, whose contributions left a lasting mark on the Nigerian media landscape.
Madam Esene, aged 64, passed away on Monday, October 6, 2025, at the National Hospital, Abuja, after a prolonged illness. She hailed from Ubiaja, Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State.
In a condolence message jointly signed by NAWOJ National Chairperson, Aisha Ibrahim, and National Secretary, Wasilah Ladan, the association described Esene as a dedicated and committed journalist who exemplified excellence, mentorship, and professionalism throughout her career.
“Her passion for journalism and unwavering commitment to excellence inspired many. Stella’s contributions to NAWOJ and the journalism fraternity will be greatly missed. We pray that her memory continues to motivate us to uphold the values of dedication, hard work, and professionalism she embodied,” the statement read.
The association extended heartfelt condolences to her family, especially her daughter and prayed for the repose of her soul, noting that her legacy will continue to inspire women journalists across the country.
Until her passing, Esene worked with True Verdict Online Newspaper after retiring from the Federal Ministry of Information.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has also expressed grief over her death, describing her as a “pillar of strength and inspiration” to women in journalism.
In a separate condolence message signed by the Council’s Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, the NUJ said Esene’s death is a monumental loss to the profession, particularly to female journalists who saw her as a mentor and advocate for gender equity in the newsroom and society.
“Her leadership, courage, and commitment to the ideals of truth and fairness in journalism remain exemplary,” the statement said, adding that her wisdom and experience were greatly valued in efforts to strengthen professionalism and inclusivity in the Nigerian media.
Both NAWOJ and NUJ commended her exceptional leadership during her tenure as NAWOJ FCT Chairperson, where she championed ethical journalism, gender equity, and the empowerment of women in the media.
Funeral arrangements, according to the family, will be announced in due course.
