Fresh diplomatic conversations between Nigeria and Poland on Thursday signalled a growing interest by both countries to strengthen cooperation in security, technology, trade and economic development amid changing global realities.

The renewed engagement came as the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, received Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister, Krzysztof Gawkowski, and his delegation at the Ministry of Interior headquarters in Abuja.

For Nigeria, the meeting represented more than a routine diplomatic visit. It reflected the country’s increasing push to build strategic international partnerships capable of supporting internal security reforms, technological advancement and economic growth.

Discussions during the meeting centred on areas considered critical to modern governance and national development, including border management, cybersecurity, digital innovation, institutional capacity building and technology transfer.

Also present at the meeting was Poland’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Michal Cygan, alongside senior members of the Polish delegation.
Speaking during the engagement, Tunji-Ojo described the visit as the beginning of what could become a stronger and more practical relationship between both countries. According to him, Nigeria and Poland possess unique strengths that can be combined to address shared challenges and unlock new opportunities.

At a time when nations are increasingly relying on technology-driven security systems and international cooperation to tackle transnational threats, the minister noted that Nigeria was eager to learn from Poland’s experience in areas such as internal security systems, digital transformation and institutional development.

He also pointed to recent economic reforms introduced by the Federal Government, including exchange rate unification, fuel subsidy removal and measures aimed at controlling inflation, saying the policies were intended to improve investor confidence and reposition the economy for long-term growth.

Tunji-Ojo further disclosed plans for future diplomatic engagements, including a proposed visit to Poland, which he said would create opportunities for direct interaction with Polish institutions and private sector players involved in security and technological innovation.

“We look forward to formalising our cooperation through official agreements and building practical solutions that will benefit both countries,” the minister said.

In his remarks, Gawkowski described Nigeria as a country with enormous economic, demographic and technological potential, stressing that Poland sees Nigeria as an important strategic partner in Africa.

The Polish Deputy Prime Minister said his country was prepared to contribute through partnerships in innovation, infrastructure development, digitalisation and advanced technology. He added that Poland remained optimistic about expanding cooperation with Nigeria across both public and private sectors.

He also acknowledged ongoing improvements in Nigeria’s internal security system, noting that such developments create room for deeper collaboration between both nations.

Observers say the meeting reflects Nigeria’s broader effort to strengthen global partnerships beyond traditional diplomatic ties by focusing on practical cooperation capable of driving security, investment and development outcomes.
