The Honourable Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Umahi, CON, on Wednesday visited his former Deputy Governor, Barr. Kelechi Igwe, to offer condolences following the brutal killing of HRH Eze Francis Igwe at his palace in Alike, Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

According to a press statement by Francis Nwaze, FIPMD, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Honourable Minister of Works, Umahi expressed profound shock over the incident, describing the act as a disturbing reflection of the growing cruelty in society. He likened the news to a “very deep dream” and condemned the perpetrators as lacking humanity.

Recalling the late monarch’s influence during his administration, Umahi highlighted the fatherly guidance and wisdom Eze Igwe offered, noting that his counsel helped sustain unity and prevent conflicts between the deputy governor and the governor. “He was a father to all of us. We worked very well with him during our struggles, giving us advice, fathering us and making sure the squabbles you will see between deputy and governor never existed between us,” the Minister said.

Umahi also offered prayers for divine justice against those responsible for the killing and encouraged the bereaved family to take solace in faith and the support of the wider Ebonyi community. He specifically addressed the widow of the late monarch, urging the family to remain strong while assuring them of his personal support. “I want you to be assured that I am a member of your family and you have my shoulder to lean on in all things,” he said.

The Minister revealed that he had communicated with the Governor of Ebonyi State, commending his swift commitment to addressing the tragic incident. Umahi expressed hope that such acts would be prevented in the future across the state and the nation.

Responding on behalf of the family, Barr. Kelechi Igwe expressed gratitude for Umahi’s presence and support during the period of grief. He acknowledged that the Minister’s example of resilience served as a source of strength for the family.

Members of the DUN Foundation accompanied Umahi, joining in prayers and showing solidarity with the grieving family. The visit reflected both personal and community support for a family struck by a tragic loss.
