Abuja – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to depart Abuja on Monday, January 26, for a state visit to the Republic of Türkiye, a move observers say could signal Nigeria’s renewed focus on diversifying international partnerships and deepening strategic economic ties.

The information was released by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, on January 25, 2025. According to the statement, the visit aims to strengthen the longstanding diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Türkiye, while exploring cooperation in key sectors such as security, education, social development, innovation, and aviation.

Observers note that the timing of the visit comes as Nigeria seeks to expand foreign investment, enhance technical collaboration, and bolster its position in regional security. The trip follows Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s official visit to Nigeria in October 2021, marking a reciprocal diplomatic engagement that, while largely symbolic until now, appears poised to yield tangible outcomes.

During the visit, both countries are expected to hold strategic discussions on finance, communication, trade, and investment. A series of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) will be signed, covering scientific research, energy, technical cooperation, media and communications, military collaboration, and protocol. Additionally, a business forum will convene investors from both nations to explore mutually beneficial opportunities, signaling a potential boost for bilateral trade.

President Tinubu will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar; Attorney General and Minister of Justice Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN; Minister of Defence General Christopher Musa (rtd); and Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Hon. Jimi Benson. Other members include Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development Hajiya Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; Minister of Culture and Creative Economy Hannatu Musawa; National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu; and Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.

Observers suggest that beyond ceremonial protocol, the visit could serve as a testing ground for deeper collaboration in security intelligence, energy, and technological innovation, areas where both nations have growing strategic interests.

The trip is expected to reinforce Nigeria-Türkiye relations and provide a platform for concrete agreements in trade, security, and technical cooperation. Observers will be watching closely to see how the discussions translate into tangible outcomes, particularly in attracting foreign investment and fostering innovation that supports Nigeria’s developmental agenda.
