The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forged a new alliance with Landmark University aimed at accelerating climate-related research, improving data quality, and deepening climate science education nationwide. The partnership, sealed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), is expected to enhance Nigeria’s ability to respond to environmental risks and promote sustainable development practices.

Through this collaboration, both institutions will work closely on a wide range of initiatives, including joint meteorological studies, improved climate data generation, and detailed analysis to support policy formulation. The agreement also provides a platform for Landmark University to broaden its academic offerings by embedding climate science more firmly into its teaching programs, preparing the next generation of experts to confront emerging environmental threats.

At the signing ceremony, NiMet’s Director General and CEO, Prof. Charles Anosike, emphasized that the move is in line with the agency’s commitment to delivering reliable, science-based climate information and strengthening Nigeria’s early warning systems. He explained that the partnership will enhance research in key areas such as drought and flood prediction as well as agriculture driven climate modelling critical components for national resilience.

Speaking on behalf of Landmark University, Pro-Chancellor Dr. Olumuyiwa Oyeniyi expressed the institution’s readiness to fully engage in the partnership. He highlighted plans for collaborative research projects, academic and staff exchanges, and community focused programs that will translate scientific knowledge into practical outcomes for farmers, local communities, and decision-makers.

The MoU not only showcases the growing importance of academic government cooperation but also reinforces the urgency of tackling climate change through shared expertise. By combining NiMet’s technical strength with Landmark University’s research capabilities, the partnership aims to enhance climate observation, elevate environmental education, and drive innovation essential for Nigeria’s sustainable future.
