Union mourns slain journalist Somtochukwu, demands urgent security reforms to safeguard press freedom and citizens’ lives

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has called for urgent reforms in the nation’s security architecture and stronger protections for journalists as Nigeria marks its 65th Independence anniversary.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, the Council said the day should not only be a celebration of nationhood but also a sober reflection on the pressing challenges of insecurity, press freedom, and the welfare of journalists.

The union described the killing of Arise News anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, in her Abuja home as a tragic reminder of Nigeria’s fragile security situation. “We cannot celebrate independence while journalists are hunted or silenced and citizens live in fear,” Ike stated.

The NUJ urged the Federal Capital Territory Administration and security agencies to adopt comprehensive measures, including community and state policing as well as modern surveillance systems such as CCTV cameras in major cities. It said the authorities must act with results, not words.

“Journalists are not enemies of the state; they are the lifeblood of democracy,” the statement read, stressing that improved working conditions, fair remuneration, and psychosocial support must be seen as national priorities.

The Council lamented that Maduagwu popularly known as Sommie had returned from abroad to contribute to Nigeria’s development through journalism, only to lose her life in tragic circumstances. “Her blood must not spill in vain. Let her memory ignite a renewed national commitment to protect journalists and confront insecurity with urgency and sincerity,” the NUJ declared.

Reaffirming its commitment to truth, fairness, and public interest, the NUJ FCT Council urged government, civil society, and the private sector to collaborate in safeguarding the press and strengthening democracy.

“As we mark this symbolic anniversary, let us remember that democracy dies in silence, and silence thrives when the press is unprotected,” the statement concluded.
