Fasting seasons call for compassion, selflessness, and life-saving support for patients in urgent need of blood.

With Christians and Muslims across Nigeria observing Lent and Ramadan, the Director-General of the National Blood Service Agency, Prof. Saleh Yuguda, has urged Nigerians to reflect the true essence of the fasting season by embracing voluntary blood donation as an act of charity.
“Noting the rare overlap of these two sacred observances, Prof. Yuguda described the period as a shared time of spiritual discipline and sacrifice, highlighting that the values of compassion, restraint, generosity, and introspection promoted during Lent and Ramadan closely align with efforts to preserve human life.”
Beyond personal devotion, he said the fasting season presents an opportunity for members of the blood donor community, faith-based organizations, and well-meaning Nigerians to translate belief into action by supporting those in need of blood.
Addressing national health concerns, the NBSA Director-General emphasized that blood remains essential for emergency response, maternal healthcare, accident victims, and patients managing chronic illnesses. He assured eligible donors that the Agency has arranged safe donation schedules to accommodate fasting individuals, particularly during evening hours.
Religious leaders were also encouraged to use their platforms to promote voluntary, non-remunerated blood donation, with Prof. Yuguda stressing that the responsibility of saving lives transcends religious and ethnic divides.
“As Christians journey through Lent in prayer and reflection, and Muslims draw closer to Allah during Ramadan, we must remember that donating blood is an act of giving hope, strength, and life,” he said.
The National Blood Service Agency reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a safe, sufficient, and accessible blood supply nationwide and expressed optimism about deepening collaboration with faith communities during the spiritually significant season.
