The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has joined the global celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026, under the theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls” with the campaign #GiveToGain.
The association emphasized that the theme is a call to move beyond dialogue toward concrete actions that uphold the rights of women and girls, ensure justice where violations occur, and create equal opportunities across all sectors of society.
Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang, Chairperson of NAWOJ FCT, said the association is committed to amplifying women’s voices, especially those often unheard. “This year’s theme reminds us that protecting rights, seeking justice, and taking action are essential to achieving gender equality. As journalists and advocates, we will continue to highlight issues affecting women and girls and advocate for policies that promote equality, dignity, and fairness,” she stated.
In line with this commitment, NAWOJ FCT has strengthened collaborations with key stakeholders, including the Federal Medical Centre and the Ministry of Health, to provide free cancer screening for female journalists in the FCT. The initiative reflects the theme by prioritizing women’s health, ensuring their right to preventive care, and taking action to reduce barriers to early detection.
To mark IWD 2026, NAWOJ FCT, in partnership with the German Embassy, is implementing two programmes to empower women journalists: a capacity-building programme designed to strengthen professional skills and leadership abilities, and a Marketplace Advocacy Event to engage grassroots women, raise awareness on women’s issues, and promote justice and equality in local communities.
NAWOJ FCT also reaffirmed its commitment to advancing women in leadership and decision-making roles, collaborating with NAWOJ National and other women’s groups to advocate for the actualization of Special Seats for Women in governance. This initiative reflects the theme by ensuring that women have equitable representation and a voice in political decision-making.
The association commended female journalists in the FCT for their resilience, professionalism, and dedication, noting that their work in telling society’s stories, especially those affecting women and vulnerable groups continues to promote rights, justice, and meaningful action.
Comrade Ikpang urged governments, institutions, and stakeholders to intensify efforts to ensure equal rights, equal opportunities, and protection for women and girls, emphasizing that collective action is necessary for a future where every woman and girl can reach her full potential.
