Nigeria has moved to consolidate its long-standing relationship with India, reaffirming that future engagements will continue to be guided by mutual respect, reciprocity and shared prosperity.

The position was articulated in Abuja when the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, hosted the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Abhishek Singh, during a courtesy visit aimed at reviewing areas of cooperation and strengthening institutional ties.

At the heart of the discussions were issues bordering on migration management, collaboration in correctional and fire services, and expanded institutional capacity-building programmes between both countries.

While acknowledging the positive impact of the Indian community on Nigeria’s economy, the minister reaffirmed the country’s openness to legitimate enterprise. He nevertheless drew a clear line on matters concerning migration data and identity systems, describing them as sovereign responsibilities. He noted that the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS) remains a critical tool in reinforcing Nigeria’s migration governance framework.

Addressing concerns around expatriate engagement, Tunji-Ojo clarified that the Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Aliens Card (CERPAC/SEPAC) is a statutory requirement under the Nigeria Immigration Service Act. He explained that exemptions apply to individuals below 18 years, students, and naturalised citizens, adding that the responsibility for compliance lies squarely with employing organisations.

The minister further stressed that expatriate participation in Nigeria’s economy must produce measurable value and contribute meaningfully to job creation for citizens. He warned that the country cannot continue to shoulder the financial burden of repatriating foreign nationals who run afoul of the law.

Responding, Singh expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s transparency, particularly in relation to consular access and the fair treatment of Indian nationals. Both parties reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening people-to-people connections and advancing bilateral cooperation through sustained dialogue anchored on mutual economic benefit.

Reiterating the Federal Government’s stance, the minister assured that the administration remains open to constructive engagement designed to promote fairness, reciprocity and balanced economic growth within the Nigeria–India strategic partnership.
