Minister Umahi inspects site, directs contractor to begin 30 day emergency reconstruction as Tinubu orders swift action

The Federal Government has moved swiftly to commence emergency repairs on a damaged flyover in Keffi, Nasarawa State, following a collision caused by an overloaded truck transporting an excavator. The impact dislodged one beam completely and severely damaged two others.

According to a press release issued by Mohammed A. Ahmed, Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Works, the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, CON, led a high-level delegation on a site inspection of the flyover on Sunday, July 20, 2025. The visit followed the incident, which occurred on Thursday, July 17, and triggered immediate safety measures by the Ministry.

Speaking during the inspection, Engr. Umahi revealed that he had earlier dispatched the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Olufunso Adebiyi, along with a team of engineers, to conduct an on-the-spot assessment. Preliminary findings confirmed visible cracks and significant structural damage, prompting the closure of the affected carriageway to prevent further deterioration and ensure public safety.

According to engineers on site, one beam collapsed completely, damaging the parapet and walkway. The remaining two beams, although affected, were found to retain some structural integrity. While the underpass has since been cleared, the overpass remains closed as a precautionary measure.

To fast-track reconstruction, the Minister appealed to CGC Nigeria Limited—the contractor currently operating in the Federal Capital Territory—to commence immediate redesign and fabrication of a new beam. He also directed that the two salvageable beams be assessed and reinforced.

The repair process, including testing, is projected to take approximately 30 days. The overpass will only be reopened to vehicular traffic after successful integrity tests confirm it is safe.

Engr. Umahi stated that the emergency works would be funded through an intervention facility, pending the release of statutory allocations. He also assured the public that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is fully briefed on the development and has directed swift action to restore the critical infrastructure.

“The President is deeply concerned and has directed immediate intervention,” Umahi said.
“We will ensure the integrity of the structure is fully restored and that the public remains safe.”

The Minister extended his condolences to families affected by the incident and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with contractors and relevant stakeholders to ensure a timely and safe completion of the reconstruction project.
