Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Victor Olaiya has urged officers and personnel of Zone 7 Headquarters to embrace discipline, professionalism and respect for human rights, saying effective policing can only thrive where discipline remains a core value.

Olaiya gave the charge during the Zone 7 General Lecture Parade held at the Zonal Headquarters in Abuja under the theme, “Effective Policing Thrives Where Discipline is Upheld.”

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Halima Mohammed, the AIG stressed that discipline is the foundation of a professional police force and quality service delivery.

He called on officers to remain committed to their responsibilities, uphold the core values of the Nigeria Police Force and demonstrate exemplary conduct both on and off duty.

Olaiya also reminded personnel that every police officer represents the image of the Force, noting that their conduct, appearance, communication and professionalism significantly influence public perception and confidence in policing. He urged officers to maintain the highest standards of integrity, courtesy, discipline and ethical behaviour in the discharge of their duties.

On public service and human rights, the AIG reaffirmed the policing philosophy of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, that “Citizens are the Boss.” He said policing is fundamentally a service-oriented profession and emphasised that interactions with members of the public must always reflect professionalism, empathy, fairness, accountability and respect for the rule of law.

He further encouraged personnel to internalise the lessons from the lecture and align their leadership, conduct and operational responsibilities with the strategic vision and policing priorities of the Inspector-General of Police.

The statement noted that the General Lecture Parade forms part of the Zone’s ongoing efforts to reinforce discipline, strengthen professionalism and promote a people-centred policing culture capable of building public trust and confidence.

It added that the initiative reflects the commitment of Zone 7 Headquarters to improving service delivery through ethical conduct, accountability and professionalism, expressing confidence that officers would apply the lessons from the exercise in the discharge of their responsibilities.
