The Nigeria Police Force says more than 140 operatives of its Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU) have benefited from British-supported specialised training in recent months, with the latest batch of 55 officers completing a two-week intensive programme on intelligence and close quarter battle in Abuja.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, said the training, organised in partnership with the British High Commission, concluded at the Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja, where the 55 participants were certified after completing advanced courses in intelligence analysis, tactical operational planning and practical room clearance techniques aimed at enhancing counter-terrorism operations.

Representing the Inspector-General of Police at the graduation ceremony, Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Counter-Terrorism Unit, Akoh Gabriel, said the partnership with the British High Commission had strengthened the operational readiness of the Force to combat terrorism and other emerging security threats.

Gabriel said that the beneficiaries include 30 CTU operatives who received specialised training in Côte d’Ivoire and another 110 personnel trained locally in intelligence and tactical combat skills.

He expressed appreciation to the British High Commission for its sustained support in strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture through capacity-building initiatives, describing the collaboration as a vital contribution to building a stronger defence against shared security challenges.

The AIG urged the newly certified officers to apply their newly acquired knowledge in combating terrorism, banditry and other criminal activities while maintaining professionalism and upholding respect for human rights.

He also commended the Inspector-General of Police for prioritising personnel development through continuous investment in specialised training, noting that such initiatives had improved the Force’s operational effectiveness.

The graduation ceremony was attended by Colonel Richard Hoyobe, Deputy Head of the British Defence Staff West Africa, who represented the British High Commission; and Deputy Commissioner of Police, Maina Mamman, of the Counter-Terrorism Unit.

The ceremony ended with the presentation of certificates to the participants, officially certifying them as Intelligence Analysts and Tactical Close Quarter Combatants.

The Nigeria Police Force said it would continue to strengthen the capacity of its personnel through regular training and strategic partnerships to improve national security and enhance public safety.
