The Federal Government has pledged full support for the proposed Baze Aviation University in Abuja, aiming to strengthen Nigeria’s aviation sector and bridge critical skills gaps.
According to a statement from the Acting Head, Press and Public Affairs of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mrs. Margaret Oyinboade, the commitment was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, during a courtesy visit by a delegation from Baze University on Thursday. The delegation was led by the University’s Chancellor, Senator Datti Baba Ahmed.
Mr. Keyamo said the proposed Aviation University aligns with Nigeria’s national development goals and the urgent need to produce skilled aviation professionals. “This initiative will enhance national connectivity, strengthen our aviation ecosystem, and position Nigeria as a hub for aviation training in West Africa,” he said.
The Minister praised Senator Baba Ahmed for his vision and dedication to quality education. He added that collaboration between the University and relevant departments and agencies of the Ministry would be crucial to the project’s success.
To accelerate progress, Mr. Keyamo directed the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Yakubu Adam Kofarmata, to work closely with the University, aviation agencies, and other stakeholders to secure all necessary approvals.
Dr. Kofarmata assured the delegation that the Ministry would give the project priority attention. “This is a strategic initiative for the growth of Nigeria’s aviation industry,” he said, reiterating the Ministry’s commitment to facilitating the establishment of the specialised institution.
Senator Baba Ahmed expressed gratitude to the Ministry for its support, noting that Baze University has grown from just 17 students in 2012 to more than 500 graduates. He said the Aviation University will focus on Aviation Studies, Aeronautical Engineering, Aircraft Management, Air Traffic Control, and Meteorology, alongside complementary fields such as Education, Healthcare, and Tourism. The project aims to produce highly skilled manpower essential for economic development and technological advancement.
Professor Abiodun Adeniyi, Registrar of Baze University, expressed optimism about the future of the proposed Aviation University. He said the project would not only expand educational opportunities in Abuja but also strengthen the country’s capacity to train the next generation of aviation professionals. “With the Ministry’s support, we are confident this initiative will set a new standard for aviation education in Nigeria,” he added.
