Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Rilwan Disu has reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to police reform, state policing and closer collaboration with strategic institutions to strengthen internal security and improve policing across the country.
The assurance came during a courtesy visit by the Commandant, management, directing staff, participants and support staff of the National Defence College (NDC) to the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the meeting focused on police reform, state policing, command and coordination protocols, as well as other emerging internal security challenges.
Speaking during the visit, the Commandant of the National Defence College, Rear Admiral A. Ahmed, said the research paper presented to the Inspector-General was the outcome of an extensive study conducted by police officers participating in the college’s programme.
He explained that while the college’s faculty provided academic supervision and methodological guidance, the participants independently developed practical, innovative and implementable policy options by drawing on their professional knowledge, operational experience and critical thinking.
Ahmed expressed confidence that the study would enrich ongoing discourse on police reform and provide recommendations to strengthen the Nigeria Police Force’s capacity to tackle existing and emerging internal security challenges through 2035.
Responding, Disu described the research as a valuable contribution to ongoing efforts to reposition policing in Nigeria, saying its findings could help shape the proposed framework for state policing.
He noted that the study’s sound methodology, assessment of public concerns and comparative review of countries operating state police systems offered useful insights for policy development and institutional reforms.
The Inspector-General also reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to sustaining collaboration with the National Defence College and other strategic partners to advance effective policing, enhance internal security and promote national development.
The delegation included the Deputy Commandant and Director of Studies, Major General K. E. Chigbu; College Secretary, Air Vice Marshal E. Owai; Provost of the Centre for Strategic Research and Studies, Prof. A. O. Ahmad; Brigadier General G. Oyinlola; Brigadier General J. M. Chima; Commodore A. N. Umaru; Colonel M. Haribu; Colonel T. O. Samson; Colonel M. I. Ajibike; Colonel A. A. Abdulhalim; as well as police participants CP S. A. Afunluhi, DCP S. Yahaya, DCP O. O. Yusuf and DCP I. B. Usang.
