Experts highlight opportunities for youth empowerment, economic growth, and global competitiveness at Africa Fashion and Arts Conference in Abuja

Stakeholders in the African fashion and creative sector have projected that the industry could generate up to $30 million before 2030, describing it as one of the continent’s most dynamic economic engines. The remarks were made at the fifth edition of the Africa Fashion and Arts Conference and Awards (AFAA), held in Abuja on Friday.

Mr. Kingsley Amako, Founder and Convener of AFAA, emphasized the importance of building a structured pipeline for talent development across all levels of the creative industry. “Without hearing from those already at the top of the value chain, we cannot ascend. There are recipes for models, entrepreneurs, and artists to excel,” he said, stressing the value of mentorship, intellectual property awareness, and digital innovation.

Amako noted that fashion is more than art; it is a unifying force and a vibrant business comparable to law or medicine. “Every person born in the world wears clothes. This makes the fashion industry universally viable,” he added, highlighting workshops led by international experts to further enhance skills in creative styling and visual arts.

Mr. Sola Oyebade, CEO of Fashion Finders Africa and Mahogany International, addressed the future of sustainable creativity in the African fashion ecosystem. Drawing from over 40 years in the industry, he emphasized the need for a robust network of designers, models, stylists, photographers, event producers, and consumers. “No one can build this ecosystem alone. We are all interdependent,” Oyebade said, citing the economic impact of events such as the GTCO Fashion Weekend, which has generated jobs and global exposure for African creatives.

Representing the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Alhaji Mouhktar Abdullahi, commended the organizers for creating a platform that fosters innovation, cultural expression, and entrepreneurship. The Ministry highlighted its commitment to promoting local production, expanding markets, and facilitating investment in the creative sector, aligning with Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Maryam Inuwa, representing the Director-General of the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR), underscored the link between fashion, tourism, and youth empowerment. “Fashion is not only an artistic expression; it is a powerful driver of economic growth and global competitiveness,” she stated, stressing the role of AFAA in showcasing Africa’s rich cultural heritage.

Stakeholders at the event emphasized that the African fashion industry, currently valued at over $31 billion, has the potential to surpass the music and film sectors combined by 2030. They called on young entrepreneurs to seize the opportunities offered by digital platforms, which allow creatives to sell products globally from the comfort of their homes.

With exhibitions, awards, and workshops integrated into a single venue, the conference highlighted not only the economic potential but also the cultural significance of African fashion. Participants were encouraged to collaborate, strengthen the value chain, and leverage technology to drive innovation and sustainable growth across the continent.
