The media office of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has described a recent High Court ruling in Lokoja, Kogi State, concerning the legal status of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a temporary setback, insisting it will not derail efforts to build a new political movement.
In a statement issued on Friday, Idris Zekeri Jnr., spokesman for Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), said the group’s legal team was reviewing the judgment and would take appropriate legal steps, including filing an appeal where necessary.
The statement followed widespread public inquiries after the court’s decision, which has generated uncertainty over the status of the NDC, a platform linked to the emerging opposition coalition.
POMR said Obi had urged supporters, coalition partners and other Nigerians backing the movement to remain calm and stay focused despite the development.
According to the media office, the coalition had anticipated legal and institutional challenges as it sought to offer what it described as a credible alternative to the country’s current political order.
It maintained that the ruling should be viewed as a temporary hurdle rather than a defeat, stressing that the group’s commitment to pursuing its political objectives through lawful means remained firm.
“The platform we are building is robust, and our legal rights will be vigorously pursued,” the statement said, adding that although the coalition might face temporary setbacks, its long-term objective remained unchanged.
