The Federal Government has announced a postponement of the 5th Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), which was initially set to hold in Abuja from June 28 to 30, 2026.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, following consultations with key stakeholders involved in the planning and coordination of the global health event.
The ministry explained that a revised date will be communicated at a later time, as engagements with partners continue to shape preparations for the rescheduled conference. It added that Nigeria remains fully committed to hosting the international gathering and is working closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure its successful delivery when it eventually holds.
The government expressed regret over any inconvenience the change in schedule may cause to participants, while appreciating the understanding and cooperation of all partners involved, as it also extended appreciation to the Troika, the Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance, the Quadripartite Joint Secretariat on AMR, member states, development partners, civil society organisations, academia, and youth networks for their continued support toward the initiative.
According to the statement, preparatory activities will continue under the guidance of the Local Organising Committee as well as relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government.
Engagement with both local and international stakeholders will also be sustained to ensure smooth execution of the conference once a new date is confirmed.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s position, the statement noted that antimicrobial resistance remains a major global public health concern requiring coordinated international response under the One Health framework.
It further stressed that Nigeria looks forward to hosting global delegates in Abuja at a rescheduled date as efforts continue to strengthen global cooperation against antimicrobial resistance.
