Veteran pilot and former Kogi governor urges creation of national airline, stronger maintenance base

Captain Idris Ichalla Wada, veteran aviator and former Governor of Kogi State, was among the distinguished figures honoured at Nigeria’s 100 Years of Aviation celebration held on December 1, 2025. Widely regarded as one of the nation’s most experienced pilots and aviation entrepreneurs, Wada’s career spans more than five decades of flight operations, airline development, and policy contributions that helped shape the modern aviation landscape.

Speaking to Liberal News at the event, Captain Wada reflected on the evolution of the industry, noting that while Nigeria has made notable progress, critical structural gaps still need to be addressed. He stressed the urgent need for a strong, functional national airline and a well established aircraft maintenance base, describing them as the backbone of a stable and competitive aviation sector. “We have done well, and I am satisfied with where we are, but it could be much better,” he said. “We must stop the cycle of start-stop operations. With a proper national airline and a viable maintenance base, the industry can expand, employ more people, train more professionals, and become a real tool for economic development.”

Captain Wada’s aviation journey began in 1973 as a Flight Instructor at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria, before he rose to the rank of Captain-in-Command at Nigeria Airways. He later became Chief Pilot and General Manager of United Air Service, eventually founding Executive Aviation Services (EAS), which evolved into EAS Airlines and later NICON Airways. Over the years, he acquired several international certifications and type ratings, including on the Boeing 727, 737, 707, BAC 1-11, DC-8 and other major aircraft types. He also served on several national aviation committees and was Vice Chairman of the Airline Operators of Nigeria.

Beyond flight decks and boardrooms, Wada played significant roles in shaping aviation policy, delivering expert lectures locally and internationally, and contributing to institutional development. He has also held leadership roles on several educational and corporate boards.

Expressing appreciation for his recognition at the centenary event, Wada said the honour holds deep personal significance. “I feel good, I am glad that I have been recognized, I would not be around for around another 100 years, so I am glad that I have been recognized in this phase of the awards by the honorable minister of Aviation and Earospace Development”, he said
