The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested two suspected fraudsters accused of deceiving unsuspecting customers by selling dummy mobile phones disguised as genuine devices.
The arrests followed complaints from customers who later discovered that the mobile phones they purchased were non-functional dummy devices.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Adamawa State Command, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, the suspects, Audu Abubakar and Nasiru Hassan, both residents of Bauchi Street in Yola North Local Government Area, were apprehended after police launched an investigation into the complaints.
Nguroje said the operation led to the recovery of several dummy phones and other exhibits believed to be connected to the alleged fraud.
The Commissioner of Police, Kabiru Umar Hassan, has directed investigators to conduct a thorough investigation into the case and ensure that the suspects are charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
The command also urged members of the public to exercise caution when purchasing mobile phones, advising buyers to patronise only accredited phone dealers, thoroughly inspect and test devices before making payment, and always obtain receipts as proof of purchase.
Police said taking these precautions would help reduce the risk of falling victim to similar scams and make it easier to trace transactions where disputes arise.
