A shocking video from Ozoro, Delta State, has sparked nationwide outrage, showing men allegedly raping women and girls under the guise of a so-called “traditional” practice. The footage, circulating widely on social media, has drawn condemnation from human rights advocates, community leaders, and citizens demanding swift justice.
For Dr. Tari Oba Oliver, founder of the Tari Oba International Foundation, politician, and a prominent advocate for women’s rights, the scenes were deeply distressing. “These videos spoiled my Sallah. I have been down since morning and cannot visit my Muslim family and friends because of these incidents,” she said, reflecting the emotional impact of the crimes.
Dr. Oba condemned the acts as “barbaric, indefensible, and a betrayal of communal safety.” She called for immediate intervention from Delta State authorities, the Nigeria Police Force, and community leaders to protect survivors, provide medical care and counseling, and bring perpetrators to justice.
The incidents raise alarming concerns about the safety of young girls in the community, many of whom attend school there and may be unaware of the ongoing abuses, carried out in the name of tradition. Dr. Oba linked the Ozoro case to broader national issues, including gender-based violence, kidnappings, and harmful cultural practices targeting women and children.
“This is unacceptable,” she said. “These are your daughters, sisters, and wives. Where is our humanity?” Her words echo the outrage felt nationwide as citizens demand accountability and protection for the most vulnerable.
The response on social media has been fierce. Hashtags such as #WomenSpeakUp, #MothersSpeakUpForYourDaughters, and #FathersSpeakUpForYourDaughters are trending, reflecting a growing movement of people refusing to look away from violence against women.
Dr Oba emphasized that in 2026, sexual violence against women and girls remains criminal and intolerable. She urged all citizens to share information, raise awareness, and pressure authorities to act swiftly. Justice for survivors she stressed, cannot wait.
