Talks focus on training engineers, modern construction equipment, and long-term technology transfer.

Nigeria is stepping up its drive to modernise its roads, seeking closer collaboration with Chinese engineering giant CGGC Global PLC to bring in advanced technology, modern equipment, and training for local engineers. The move comes as the Federal Ministry of Works intensifies efforts to upgrade the nation’s infrastructure and adopt global best practices.

According to a press release issued by Mohammed A. Ahmed, Director of Information and Public Relations, the Minister of State for Works, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Goronyo, hosted a high-level CGGC delegation on Monday at the ministry’s Abuja headquarters. The meeting focused on exploring ways Nigeria can leverage Chinese expertise to improve road construction, maintenance, and technical capacity nationwide.

The session was attended by senior ministry officials and the Managing Director of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Engr. Dr. Chukwuemeka Agbasi. Goronyo, who represented the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, highlighted Nigeria’s need for modern engineering tools, advanced technical training, and globally tested methods to enhance road delivery across the country.

He outlined key areas for collaboration, including training Nigerian engineers in China, access to modern construction and maintenance equipment, and the transfer of advanced technologies that can be adapted locally for long-term sustainability.

The CGGC delegation, led by Vice President He Yongjun, expressed willingness to support Nigeria’s infrastructure ambitions but requested more direct access to project opportunities. Yongjun also noted concerns about navigating the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework, the federal government’s official and transparent procurement route.

Both sides agreed to establish a joint technical committee to examine the ministry’s requests and evaluate CGGC’s proposals. The committee is expected to develop a clear framework for cooperation, with a follow-up meeting planned to assess progress and determine actionable next steps.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to strategic international partnerships aimed at expanding national capacity, facilitating technology transfer, and accelerating the delivery of resilient and sustainable road infrastructure across Nigeria.
