Controller-General NCoS pledges collaboration on inmate rehabilitation and reintegration, while Ministry explores joint frameworks for social intervention programmes

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) is moving to strengthen collaboration with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to enhance rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates nationwide. The Controller-General of NCoS, Slyvester Ndidi Nwakuche, MFR, mni, visited the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, aiming to align correctional initiatives with government social intervention programmes.
In a statement on Thursday by JN Osuji, Chief Superintendent of Corrections and Service Public Relations Officer at NCoS, CGC Nwakuche praised the Ministry for its impactful interventions in support of vulnerable populations and reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to fostering reformation, rehabilitation, and successful reintegration of offenders into society.
The Controller-General emphasized the importance of collaboration in key areas, including inmates’ rehabilitation, capacity development, and agricultural programmes within custodial centres. He noted that partnership with the Ministry would allow ex-offenders to benefit from federal social support programmes upon release, easing their transition and reducing the likelihood of reoffending.
Welcoming the visit, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Olubunmi Olusanya, described the engagement as timely and significant, noting the strong alignment between the Ministry’s mandate and NCoS objectives, particularly in addressing the needs of vulnerable groups.
The Honourable Minister, Dr. Bernard Mohammed Doro, warmly received the Controller-General and his delegation, assuring them of the Ministry’s readiness to support initiatives advancing inmates’ welfare and reintegration. He highlighted the National Social Register, which currently captures millions of beneficiaries nationwide, and expressed interest in harmonizing data with NCoS to ensure eligible ex-offenders access government support programmes.
To facilitate implementation, Dr. Doro approved the creation of a joint technical committee and requested nominations from NCoS to begin work on a framework for cooperation.
The visit represents a key step in strengthening collaboration between NCoS and the Ministry to improve public safety and inmate reintegration.
