The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has been named the 2025 Personality of the Year (Infrastructure Transformation Champion) by Aljazirah Nigeria Newspaper, following an extensive independent assessment of the Ministry’s performance across the country.
The recognition, announced on Wednesday, came after months of scrutiny, project verification, and internal review by the newspaper’s award committee, which evaluated the scale, execution, and impact of ongoing infrastructure projects.
Speaking after receiving the award alongside senior officials of the Ministry, Umahi said the process behind the recognition gave it added significance, noting that the assessment was conducted without his prior knowledge.
He said the Ministry’s approach to project delivery is anchored on transparency and accountability, maintaining that all projects executed under his leadership are open to public and institutional scrutiny.
According to the Minister, structured systems have been put in place to ensure that every stage of execution, from planning and costing to implementation is subject to verification, with oversight from key officials and collaboration with contractors.
To reinforce this position, Umahi disclosed that the Ministry formally invited the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to independently assess its projects and procurement processes.
He revealed that the ICPC has commenced its review, which includes both documentation checks and physical inspection of projects across various locations.
The Minister also highlighted a major policy direction under his leadership the transition from asphalt to concrete road construction describing it as a strategic decision aimed at improving durability and reducing long-term maintenance costs.
He acknowledged that the shift came with initial challenges but insisted it represents a long-term investment in national infrastructure, with many of the roads designed for extended lifespan.
Beyond construction, Umahi emphasised the broader role of infrastructure in driving economic activities and improving mobility, noting that better road networks are essential to national connectivity and development.
He added that the Ministry remains focused on delivering tangible results that directly impact citizens, rather than seeking recognition.
The Minister also urged media practitioners to prioritise accuracy and responsibility in reporting, especially in a fast-paced information environment.
Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of the newspaper, Bassey Williams, said the selection followed a detailed evaluation process and consultations, with Umahi emerging as a standout among public office holders.
He noted that under the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Ministry of Works has recorded improved execution capacity, strategic planning, and visible nationwide impact.
Williams also stated that previous allegations against the Minister were subjected to investigation in 2024, with no evidence of wrongdoing established.
He added that major infrastructure projects, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and other key road corridors, continue to position infrastructure development as a central driver of national growth.
