The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) men’s volleyball team upset defending champions Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Spikers 3-1 on Saturday, while the women’s team extended its winning streak in the ongoing 3rd Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) Volleyball Premier League in Abuja.
The men recovered from a first-set loss to win 21-25, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-15, a result that further strengthened their title credentials after recently ending the unbeaten run of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Spikers.
In the women’s category, defending champions Nigeria Customs continued their dominant campaign with a commanding straight-set victory over Olalomi Royal Angels, winning 25-18, 25-22 and 25-7 to stay on course for another league title.
The victories came as the opening phase of the championship, which commenced on June 16 following a technical meeting on June 15, entered its decisive stage.
Speaking after the matches, Customs Sports Secretary, Superintendent of Customs Samuel Onikeku, attributed the teams’ impressive performances to sustained investment by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, and the Service’s management in the development of players and coaches.
He said the Service had continued to strengthen its technical capacity through advanced coaching programmes while exposing players to major international competitions, including tournaments in Kigali and the Zone 3 Championships.
According to Onikeku, the long-term objective is to build teams capable of competing successfully at the continental level.
“Our goal is to conquer Africa. We are building a team that can compete at the continental level, and every phase of this league is part of that journey,” he said.
With the first phase of the competition nearing its conclusion, both Customs teams remain firmly in contention for their respective league titles.
