On this 62nd Independence Anniversary of Nigeria, l seize this rare moment to congratulate all Nigerians and also extend to every single one of our citizens this message of hope.

62 years ago our founding fathers and mothers secured our independence by liberating us from the clutches of colonial imperialism. Over the intervening decades we have been striving to build a strong, prosperous and stable nation; a process that has its ups and down.

We owe to ourselves to build this nation into an economic super power with prosperity for all and preeminence in the comity of nations. It is imperative for us to lead this nation beyond where our heroes past left it and beyond the efforts of the current leaders and managers of our state craft.

My message is that Nigerians should keep hope alive. We should endeavour to exercise our civic right by voting on election days and ensure that each and every vote counts. The act of voting is not merely a civic duty; it’s our inalienable right as free citizens.

As Nigerians, we are the pride of Africa. We cannot be less. We have to overcome fear, banish doubts, and overcome the political and economic conditions that degrade and dehumanize us.

We are blessed with numerous endowments, especially the presence of massive natural resources. However, our greatest assets are our people. With a population of over 200 million people and being the largest black nation in the world Nigeria is without doubt a force to reckon with.

Fellow Nigerians, l present to you the promise and prospect of a more perfect nation, a union more vibrant than ever, more tolerant than ever and more inclusive of the vulnerable groups in our midst.

And l repeat my solemn charge to all our people: keep hope alive even as you join me in the urgent task of making Nigeria great.

Happy Independence Day.

Nigerians, I love you.
