Democracy Day ; Borno Governor , Professor Zulum’s Giant Strides In Borno State And Dividends Of Democracy

Since the return to democracy in 1999,about two decades ago,the level of transformation and change being witnessed by the good people of Borno state and abode of the then Kanem- Borno empire, is incommensurable in the last one year.

 

The journey to the political emancipation of the people of Borno state began after the return of democracy in 1999,with former governor, Senator Ali Modu Sherif,popularly known as ‘SAS’ eight years stint, and later the ascension of the immediate past governor,
Senator Kassim Ibrahim Shetima.

 

Unpertubed by the activities of Boko Haram insurgents and banditry which include both major and minor attacks, that led to killings of hapless citizens,Governor Babagana Umara Zulum combined both security and developement of the state as a guide towards deploying his tool of adminstration,a clear indication that he took charge as the ‘Chief Securtiy Officer’ of Borno State.

No wonder the latest commendation came from the Chief of Army staff, General Buratai,saluting the governor and it’s adminstration’s contributions to the security of lives and properties in the near war ravaged State.

 

Professor Zulum’s style of administration is unique that he priortised social services as the cardinal point of his new administration,redoubling efforts and building on the legacies of the two previous adminstrations.

 

His efforts in the areas of Education, Health,Housing,Provision of Water, Electricity ,and the overall Infrastructural developement of the state,is a clear indication that his predecessor made a choice of a ’round peg in a round hole’ on his election, as the state governor in the 2019 February general elections.

 

Just one year in office,Zulum’s all round developement was felt both in human capital developement and infrastructural break through in Borno State .

With a roubust team as members of the state executive council,and a well grounded state deputy governor, Workaholic Professor Babagana Umara Zulum had concluded the template of four years tenure ,just a year as Borno State Governor.

 

His highly prioritised welfare of workers and pensioners is unequalled in the history of the state and the entire Northern parts of Nigeria,as his modest approach to all issues had douse the tension of Boko Haram attacks in the state.

 

Build up to the world health emergency of COVID-19,Governor Zulum without delay,set a machinery in motion and a world standard isolation centre in Borno State, to address the new pandemic that had ravaged both developed and developing countries like Nigeria.Borno and Lagos were the two states at the forefront of addressing the immediate consequences of the new scourge.

This developement has reduced to the barest minimum the grave effects of the new pandemic and the attendant panic in other states of Nigeria, without special funding from the federal government as it was attracted to Lagos State.

 

His recent decisions, different from other 35 state governors on the Almajiris deportation to their various states,earned him more accolade and a special place in the heart of many Nigerians,as he rose against the policy and choose to rehabilitate the Islamic students with a view to making them realising their potentials.

 

One year in office ,Borno state governor’s achievements is adored both national, international,local newspaper and other medium of communication,not for sycophancy,but as a reference point to the developement of states and other organs of goverrment in Nigeria.
